The roles

What we're looking for

We’re looking to appoint one or two Advisory Non-Executive Directors to join our Board.

This is a significant point in NCC’s journey. We’re midway through a five-year strategy to double our impact, deepen partnerships, and deliver significant impact for major opportunities emerging across the aerospace, defence and energy sectors.

Our footprint is expanding both within and beyond the West of England, and our role in building UK industrial capability continues to grow.

We work across advanced manufacturing and applied R&D – turning complex technical challenges into practical, scalable outcomes. Our teams bring together hands-on engineering, deep sector knowledge, and industrial-scale facilities to help UK companies adopt new technologies with confidence.

We’re seeking experienced individuals to contribute to this mission at Board level – helping shape strategy, strengthen relationships, and ensure our work continues to deliver national and regional value.

About the role

As an Advisory NED, you’ll support the strategic direction of the NCC and provide independent oversight, guidance and challenge to the executive team. You’ll contribute to:

  • Strengthening relationships with stakeholders across industry, government, academia and policy
  • Supporting the organisation’s approach to risk within a complex operating environment
  • Shaping long-term priorities in line with national and regional industrial strategies
  • Extending NCC’s reach and impact across sectors and geographies

You will be appointed to the NCC Subsidiary Board. You may also be invited to join the *NCC–University of Bristol Innovation Steering Board which focusses on ramping up innovation and impact, subject to discussion during the appointment process.

Who we’re looking for

We’re looking for senior-level experience, sound judgement, and a strong understanding of the environments we operate in. You’ll bring an independent perspective, a collaborative approach, and the ability to contribute to Board-level thinking.

We are particularly interested in candidates with:

  • Experience in engineering, manufacturing, applied R&D or industrial technology
  • A professional network that can help advance innovation and capability
  • A track record of leading transformation or technology adoption
  • Experience of working across sectors or public/private boundaries
  • Understanding of governance, accountability, and organisational risk
  • The ability to provide balanced support and challenge to the executive
  • A commitment to inclusive, long-term value creation

Time and terms

Term: Initial two-year appointment

Time commitment:

  • 6 – 7 days per year including 3 Board meetings and preparation for the Subsidiary Board.
  • *Approx 4 – 5 days per year including Board meetings and preparation for NCC-University of Bristol Innovation Steering Board.

Remuneration:

  • £10,000 per annum for the Subsidiary Board role
  • *Additional £10,000 if appointed to the NCC–University of Bristol Innovation Steering Board

* The NCC and the University of Bristol are in the process of setting up a new Innovation Steering Board, which will meet three times per year and report into the NCC Subsidiary Board. This Innovation Steering Board aims to:

  • Support the creation and development of new innovation opportunities based on the University’s excellent and broad research strengths and leveraging NCC’s innovation and industrialisation capabilities. This could include areas adjacent to NCC’s current technology and sector portfolio.
  • Improve the ‘wiring’ between the NCC and the University to maximise research and innovation impact, including delivering on regional growth strategies.
  • Through its working groups the Innovation Board will also support improved communication across the academic and NCC community.

The NCC-UoB Innovation Board and the NCC Subsidiary Board would have significant overlap in membership. It is anticipated that that may be potential for one or both NEDs to sit on the Innovation Board in addition to the main Subsidiary Board.
